How to Piece Patterned Fabrics

Sometimes when you’re cutting from fabric that should be just barely big enough you make a mistake or you find out there wasn’t quite enough fabric after all and you’re left with only scraps to try to eke out an extra piece or two.  All you can do is piece the scraps together as best you can.

Quilt Museum Faces Funding Crisis

The latest news from the San José  Museum of Quilts and Textiles is dire.  Marie Strait, President of the Board of Directors, has sent out a letter saying that if the museum can’t raise $80,000 for operating costs by March 31st the museum will be forced to close.  Her letter can be found here.

Lost Quilt Come Home

The Lost Quilt Come Home website  began in 1999 after a shipping company nearly lost of one of my own quilts. It was missing for almost two months before my quilt was finally recovered, but during that time, I was surprised by the wide range of emotions I felt over the loss. I also realized that I was blithely unaware of all the potential hazards a quilt might face. I started the website hoping to raise awareness among quilters so that they could take steps to protect their quilts before anything happened.

Free 3-Day Access to “The Quilt Show”

National Quilting Day 2013

National Quilting Day is March 16th this year.  This special holiday for quilters was started 23 years ago by the National Quilting Association.

Many quilt guilds celebrate quilting on this day by holding special workshops, retreats or by gathering to sew charity quilts. Individuals or on-line groups often celebrate by spending the day quilting, or by visiting their favorite quilt shops.  One of the online forums I belong to has had a running joke for years about setting our sewing baskets out for “Quilta-Claus,” who brings good quilters gifts of thread or fabric on National Quilting Day.

How Long Did It Take?

This is a question many crafters dread.  I know I do, but it seems I’m asked it almost every time I give someone a quilt.

“How long did it take?”

If you want to answer it seriously, do you include the years spent perfecting your skills, or the weeks or months you may have spent considering the pattern and gathering just the right materials?  Do you add in the months or even years it may have spent as a UFO while you worked on other projects instead?  Do you estimate the number of weeks or months you were actively working on it?
