National Quilting Day 2013

National Quilting Day 2013

By Janelle Cahoon, Quiltcentric

National Quilting Day is March 16th this year.  This special holiday for quilters was started 23 years ago by the National Quilting Association.

Many quilt guilds celebrate quilting on this day by holding special workshops, retreats or by gathering to sew charity quilts. Individuals or on-line groups often celebrate by spending the day quilting, or by visiting their favorite quilt shops.  One of the online forums I belong to has had a running joke for years about setting our sewing baskets out for “Quilta-Claus,” who brings good quilters gifts of thread or fabric on National Quilting Day.

This year, the National Quilting Association has made a free “Nine Patch Stars and Stripes” quilt pattern designed by Kathy Lichtendahl available on their website, here.   NQA is encouraging quilters to use this pattern to make a donation quilt for any organization supporting veterans, military or their families and then send NQA a photo and short story about the completed project.  These submissions can then become part of the “Celebrate America” showcase at the NQA Quilt Show in Columbus, Ohio from June 27 – 29, 2013.

This year for National Quilting Day I’m planning to make some progress on one of my old UFO’s and hopefully also practice machine quilting on some small quilt sandwiches.

What will you do?
