If You Quilt It They Will Come

If You Quilt It They Will Come

By Janelle Cahoon, Quiltcentric

Have you noticed the unique phenomenon that happens whenever you have a quilt nearly finished?  The perfect owner comes forward for it.

I’m a quilter. I’ve been a quilter for many years, but I don’t have a quilt on my own bed; I blame the “if you quilt it, they will come” factor for that.

Have you noticed this phenomenon in your own life?  Try it.  It’s like magic.  Start working on a quilt, either for yourself or with no particular recipient in mind.  As it nears completion one of 3 things will happen:

  • Someone in your family will claim it:  Kids seem to do this a lot.  Take it as the compliment it is.
  • You’ll give it as a gift:  As soon as you start thinking “Kim really likes these colors,” that quilt has found a new home.
  • A charitable cause will need it:  Either that’s as a comfort quilt for a friend, a response to a natural disaster or for a school fundraiser.

These are all excellent reasons to give a quilt.  In fact, they may be a big part of why we make quilts.  But they’re also why so many of us have so few quilts of our own, because if you quilt it, they will come (and claim it for themselves!)
