Charity Sewing: The 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge

Charity Sewing: The 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge

By Janelle Cahoon, Quiltcentric

Quilters tend to be generous people: generous with our time, generous with our skills, and generous with our fabric stashes.  American Patchwork & Quilting’s One Million Pillowcase Challenge offers a quick and easy way for us to touch the life or lift the spirits of someone in need in our own community.

How?  Simply by making and donating a pillowcase. Foster kids and sick kids love novelty-print pillowcases.  If someone – child or adult — is sick, alone, or hurting, a cheerful pillowcase can brighten their room and remind them that someone cares.

All you have to do to participate is make a pillowcase.  (See some patterns here or watch a how-to video here .  When you’re done, donate it directly to the person or charity of your choice.  There’s a helpful list of charities that need pillowcases here   if you don’t know of any locally.  Then remember to add your pillowcases to the Challenge pillowcase counter.

Over 480,000 pillowcases have been donated so far.  Why not spend an afternoon making a few contributions of your own?
