2013 Hoffman Challenge® Open

2013 Hoffman Challenge® Open

By Janelle Cahoon, Quiltcentric

The annual Hoffman Challenge ® contest for quilts, dolls, clothing and accessories is now open, and you can see this year’s Challenge fabric here.  With a deadline of July 19, 2013, it’s time to get quilting if you want to enter!

This year’s Challenge has 3 quilt categories, including Pieced Quilts, Appliquéd Quilts and Mixed Technique (quilts that have both piecing and appliqué.)

Prizes will be awarded in all 3 categories for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, as well as Honorable Mention, Curator’s Choice, Best Hand Workmanship, Best Machine Workmanship, Best Incorporation of Challenge Fabric, and Best 1st Time Entry.  That’s a lot of chances to win!

The prizes will be the same for all 3 categories of quilts, ranging from a 1st Place prize of $500 plus $250 worth of Sulky products to a prize of Hoffman fabric for the Honorable Mention and 3 of the other award winners in each quilt category.  Winners and selected other entries will also join the Hoffman Challenge traveling collection, and will be displayed in various venues around the country over the next year.

The 2013 Hoffman Challenge fabric is K7126 Peacock Gold #136G, and your quilt must contain a recognizable amount of it in the body of the quilt, but according to the Official Rules  you can use any coordinating fabrics you choose – even if they’re from another manufacturer.

The size of the quilt entries is limited; the combined total measurement of all sides cannot be more than 160 inches (for example a 40” x 40” quilt equals 140” but so does a 30” x 50” quilt.) Circular and other non-rectangular quilts have special rules, so be sure to check out the Official Rules   on the Hoffman Challenge website.

The Hoffman Challenge usually gets between 500 and 1,000 entries total each year including quilts, dolls, clothing and accessories.  Of those, about 350 are selected for inclusion in the traveling exhibitions.  Why not take a look at the Challenge fabric and see if it inspires you?
