Winners of 2013 IQF Houston Announced

By Janelle Cahoon, Quiltcentric

Photos of the award-winning quilts from the International Quilt Festival in Houston have now been posted online for those of us who weren’t able to get to the show this year, and once again the winners were breath-taking, awe-inspiring and any other synonym you have for “amazing.”  I really wish I could have gone to see these quilts in person!

The theme this year was “Quilts:  A World of Beauty” and it’s great to see the way that theme was reflected in the winning quilts.  You can see the photos here.

The Handi Quilter Best of Show Award with a prize of $10,000 went to Chihuly’s Gondola by Melissa Sobotka of Richardson, Texas.  This quilt is a contemporary art quilt with a realistic image of a small boat filled with richly-colored blown-glass balls.  The effect of the light shining on glass and the reflections in the water are simply amazing and are achieved with raw-edged appliqué of batik fabric and the addition of specialized ink to outline or add color, Ms. Sobotka  told the Houston Chronicle in her post-win interview.  The quilt is named for Dale Chihuly,  a world-famous glass blower known for his use of bright colors and fantastic shapes, who has done many outdoor installations of floating glass pieces.
