Quilt Donations Needed for Midwest Tornado Victims

Quilt Donations Needed for Midwest Tornado Victims

By Janelle Cahoon, Quiltcentric

I know a lot of us have been wondering what we can do to get a warm quilt into the hands of those who have been affected by the Nov. 17th tornados in the Midwest, and now Quilts of Compassion, a non-profit based in Toledo, OH, has announced that they will be collecting and distributing donated quilts to those throughout the Midwest who have been directly impacted.

Janice Grimes, the Quilts of Compassion contact, says, “Due to the violent storms that produced over 80 tornadoes and destroyed 1000’s of lives…we have launched our “Quilts for the Midwest” Quilt Drive to support our Disaster Response Team. We have currently deployed in our home base due to 5 tornadoes that damaged or destroyed about 100 homes in 5 towns east and south of Toledo.  We are planning to deploy every week to cities in IL, IN, MI, OH, KY, PA and WI.  As of today, in the upcoming weeks, we are going to Kokomo, IN, Washington, IL and Brookport, IL.  We also will be working with 2 Medical Centers that  are treating tornado survivors in IL and IN.  This is just the beginning of the list of cities we are planning to deploy to but we need the help of our quilting community.”

Donated quilts can be quilted or tied and are needed in all sizes for men, women and children.   Crocheted baby blankets and lap afghans are also being accepted.

If you want to participate, just send your donated quilts to:  Quilts of Compassion, Disaster Response Team, P.O. Box 350296, Toledo, OH 43635.  If you need to contact the group, you can send an email to quiltsofcompassion@gmail.com or call Janice Grimes at 419-708-9343.

This 100% volunteer organization also collected and distributed quilts to the tornado victims in Oklahoma this summer, ultimately delivering over 1,600 quilts directly to those affected.  Let’s help them help in this disaster, too!
