Astronaut Karen Nyberg Announces Star Block Challenge

Via Press Release

International Space Station Expedition 37 Flight Engineer Karen Nyberg of NASA, a life-long lover of sewing, has invited fellow crafters to join her in stitching a global community space quilt.

Nyberg, who recently completed her mission aboard the orbiting laboratory, was able to complete a star-themed block that she sewed during her limited free time in space.  She has now invited quilters from the public to create their own star-themed quilt block to help celebrate her mission and passion for the quilting arts.

“Now that I’ve tried my hand sewing in space, I can say one thing with certainty:  It’s tricky,” Nyberg said in a video sent down from the space station.  “This is what I’ve made.  It’s far from being a masterpiece, but it was made in space.  I’m inviting all of you to create your own star-themed quilt clock.  We’ll be combining them with my block to create a quilt for [the] 40th anniversary International Quilt Festival in Houston.  I can’t wait to see what we make together.”

To enter, quilters just need to create a star-themed 9.5” –square unfinished block (so it will be 9: square when finished).  The theme can be any variation on a star; it can be traditional, modern or artsy, in any color scheme or technique, but must not include any embellishments.   The unfinished block must be signed with a permanent marker, using your name and your location.

The signed block should then be sent to Quilts, Inc., at the following address:  Star Block Challenge, Attn: Rhianna Griffin, 7660 Woodway, Ste., 550, Houston, TX 77063.

Your block must be received by the deadline of August 1, 2013.  There is a limit of one block submitted per person.

It will be great to see these blocks combined into a “stellar” quilt in the IQF in Houston this fall!
