The Graveyard of Quilt Gadgets

Every time I go to a quilt show, I find myself joining the crowd of quilters around those booths demonstrating the latest, greatest, “must-have” gadget. We stand there amazed as the fast-talking, fast-sewing demonstrator shows us how this gadget will allow us to save time and effort, improve our quilts and our lives, bring about world peace, and . . . oh, how did we ever live without it?

Product Review: Retro Clean

Retro Clean quilt soak is one of the items I bought at the Houston Quilt Festival specifically to review for you.  It promises it’s “the gentle solution for safely removing yellow and brown age stains from all washable vintage fabrics.”  The list of stains it says it will remove includes those caused by water damage, mildew, coffee, tea, blood, wood oil, tobacco and perspiration.

Class 66 Bobbin Warning

For those of us who use the old vintage machines, here’s a “warning” about the packages of Dritz Class 66 metal bobbins now for sale in the stores.  They don’t make ‘em like they used to.

The center hole in the bobbin is a wee bit smaller than it used to be and this hole will not fit on the bobbin spindle on your vintage machine.  I guess I will have to carry an old bobbin with me in the future when I go to the store . . .

Quilters’ Back-to-School Shopping

I still get excited by back-to-school shopping time.  I always loved going to pick out just the right notebooks and getting new pencils and crayons, and this time of the year the urge is still strong to visit the office supply store and check out the new offerings – so this week I did just that, focusing on the supplies that would most appeal to quilters.
